Size

To determine the length of your coffee table, first determine the length of your couch. As a general rule, your coffee table should be between 12 and 23 times the length of the side of the couch it will be facing.

The normal height of a coffee table is between 16″ and 18″, however depending on the height of your couch, you may want to go taller or shorter. For best comfort and cohesion, the coffee table height should be within 2″ of the height of your sofa.

Rectangle

Rectangular tables are the most common type of coffee table and go well with longer couches. If your area has a lot of soft lines, consider breaking them up with a rectangle coffee table.

Square

Square coffee tables, like round tables, look better in smaller or square-like seating arrangements. However, if everyone is sat on a long sofa, square tables may not be long enough for everyone to reach.

Oval

If you prefer the shape of a round coffee table but have a longer sofa, an oval coffee table will work.

If conventional coffee tables aren’t your thing, free-form coffee tables are. Geometric shapes such as triangular, hexagonal, and half-circle tables would look great in a quirky yet informal setting.

If you choose a more abstract shape, your ordinary coffee table can fit in your environment like a sculpture or work of art. If your living room has a modern, sophisticated appeal, we recommend a free-form style.
